about

If I recall correctly (groan here), "Recall" was the final full song I wrote before I moved from Texas to my home state of Massachusetts after graduating high school in 2015. I think it's fair to say I didn't give the South the nicest send-off, and I've continued to regard it with mixed thoughts since, but I'd like to believe there's good to be found in most experiences, and to deny that I had fun there for years with some of the kindest friends I've ever met is just incredulous.

On the other hand, while I've spent several months over the last two years wondering what could've been had I stayed closer, I've more recently come to peace with the fact that moving, be it for new opportunities or just chance, is simply a part of life, and it is what you make of it. I was neither the first nor last person in our friend group to move from the neighborhood I'm talking about in this song, but a part of my heart still resides there, as I think is the case for all of us who called it home at one point or another.

If I had to characterize "Recall," I'd say it ended up blunt but universal. I set out to not shield anything here behind fancy turns of phrase or base it solely in my own specific circumstances. That was a bit of a departure for me, and for that reason, it was hard to write and even harder to commit to. But much like actually living there, I learned a lot along the way and I'll fondly carry the memories with me.

I hope you all enjoy the song.

lyrics

We used to walk around this town like we owned it, but since then I've succumbed to its clutch.
And if there's anything I've learned from all this, I've been complacent far too much.
You complied when I asked you to grab a hold...then you prematurely let it go.

And it took me a while to pinpoint the absence.
Surely it couldn't be our faults.
Some external, ruthless influence caused these valleys to form between our hearts.
And we tried upon offer to patch the holes, but uneven stitching always shows.

These streets don't speak to me the same way now.
Just a murmur like a recollection of days we spent with peace in the unspoken terror that the best of our lives hadn't just came and went.
And as luck would have it, we found it together.
But it's been years since we ran about, and the feeling's fading the longer I stay here, so I think it's time to run myself.

But I will not forget here.
No, I will not forget this place.
Oh, I will not forget here.
While the trace of a sunset lingers, exhale its light back to the world.

We used to walk around this town like we owned it, but since then I'd succumbed to its clutch.
And if there's anything I learned from all this, I was complacent far too much.
I complied when you told me to grab a hold, but now I think it's time I let go.
